vs Desborough Town

FA CUP Extra Preliminary Round

11th August 2018

A seven goal thriller that saw Arlesey lose out by the odd goal that was a goal that very few keepers in the world would have saved was a good afternoons entertainment for the Arlesey crowd even if in the end a disappointing one.

Arlesey should have taken the lead in the 1st min as Aarron Browne raced down the wing a put in a great cross but it proved just an inch to high for the stretching Lorrell Smith. With Desborough taking a more direct route with a few long shots they got ahead after 6mins as a defensive header went the wrong way and fell to Lamar Parkes in space and he slotted the ball past Robbie Ponting and inside of the post        for 0-1.

Arlesey created a great chance on 17mins as from a FK Smith turned well and shot a ball across the goal that just skimmed the post, the ball stayed in play and came to Fuller who flashed a ball back across the goal just past the other post, close but not in the net.

The game was a good end to end game with both side forcing corners but neither able to get the finishing touch but with half time approaching and in added on time James Hatch stretched onto a good cross ball putting the ball back across goal to lorrell Smith who put it over the line for 1-1 at HT.

The 2nd period was much the same as the 1st with both sides playing open attacking football, and Desborough should have gone back in front on 52 min as Jordan Henson met a good cross with a free header but although it beat Ponting it failed to beat the post  hitting it square on a going clear.

Arlesey got their noses in front in the 58th min as Smith picked up a great ball in from the left in the box and he turned well before shooting into the bottom corner for 2-1 and his second goal of the afternoon.

On a lot of games that really should have been that, the home side tightens up, the away team tires and the game drifts to a home win, BUT Desborough weren’t in the mood to let last year’s defeat to Arlesey in this competition at this stage happen again and kept pushing forward, a good run from Luke Stevens forced a good save from Ponting pushing the ball over the bar, and from a FK Will Arnold stretched just about everything to put the ball onto Ty Clarke who shot past Ponting to level the score at 2-2 on 66mins.

Arlesey pushed forward and Adam Mead shot just over the bar before Desborough threw 3 players into the box outstripping the flat footed defence and Jason Turner shot home to put Desborough in front again at 2-3 at 71 mins.

Turner headed just past the post as Desborough now had their tails up and then the goal of the game came as sub Merdy Maki cut in along the edge of the box, the defenders failed to get in a tackle before he slipped it to Dan White who hit a sweet shot into the top corner that nobody would have saved for 2-4 on 78 mins

This still wasn’t the end of the action for the fans though as Arlesey this year have a good spirit and still didn’t give up,  Lorrell Smith pushed on a good ball to Ash Fuller who shot low under the keeper into the net for 3-4 on 84 mins and Kai Ashley hit a good shot that Chris Jones in Desborough’s goal took 2 attempts to get under control, Arlesey pushed on for the grandstand finish; from a throw Hatch headed across the box but nobody could get to the ball and in the end Desborough hung on to claim victory and a home tie v Kempston in the next round.

A really good watch this game was an old fashioned cup tie that could have gone either way and Arlesey will be really disappointed to fall at the first hurdle in this year’s FA Cup.
