MATCH REPORT

vs Leighton Town

SSML Premier Division

8th September 2018

With so many player and club connections this game was always liable to be a keenly contested game and with Leighton being heavily defeated last week they were obviously going to raise their game for this week.

Leighton started strongly pushing forward from the kick off and Lewis McBride attacked from the start winning a corner in the 1st min that Dave Murphey headed just over the bar. Just a minute later Alex O’Brian dispossessed Phil Payne in the centre and ran through firing off a good shot that brought a good save out of Robbie Ponting in goal.

An Arlesey free kick was well met with a towering header from James Hatch but it was straight at the keeper and a good ball in from Ryan Lamond was also well taken by Tom Wyant in goal.

From a Leighton free kick ex Arlesey player Matt Hall picked up the ball and cut in hitting a cross/shot that hit the far post before gong clear and McBride cut in and hit a shot from the edge of the area that pulled another good save from Ponting.

An Arlesey corner was half cleared to Aarron Browne who hit a low shot that was taken by Wyant ,but the move of the game can on 19 mins as James Hatch played a ball out to Ash Fuller and in what im told was a move from the training ground he cut in and pulled a ball back along the edge of the box to Aarron Browne who slid the ball into the net close to the post for 1-0 to Arlesey.

Arlesey were now starting to impose themselves; Demi Debola made one of his surging runs from the back beating two defenders but his shot was wide, and Lamond played a great ball in that fed in Lorrell Smith; the keeper came out and the two clashed with Smith going down a and keeper holding his midriff. This could really have gone either way but it was really just a competitive coming together however the Ref saw it as a foul and booked the unfortunate Smith somewhat harshly.

Kynan Issac won the ball well in the centre and ran on through the Arlesey defence but his shot was wide of the target; and a Leighton attack that had several shots blocked was dealt with rather better by the defence as Leighton tried to get back into the game and O’Brien had a shot the went over the bar. Issac had a shot that was well saved by Ponting followed by a good shot by Junior Muya that again Ponting did well with putting it out for a corner that Hatch headed clear. Makudzeyi Makuza received a yellow card as he tangled out on the wing with O’Brien who was also booked, and as the half finished a free kick by Fuller found Hatch whose header was taken by Wyatt and Fuller had a volley that went over the bar but it was 1-0 at HT.

The 2nd half started with a good shot from Lorrell smith that pulled a good save from Wyant and an Arlesey free kick saw a shot from Fuller that pulled another save from the keeper. An Arlesey corner saw Wyant punch it as Hatch challenged him but it went over, and at the other end McBride hit a bouncing shot that was well taken by Ponting. Aarron Browne became the 3rd Arlesey player to see yellow before he was subbed for Carl Chambers. A really good shot from O’Brien saw Ponting pull off the best save of the day as he stretched and pushed it around the post for a corner. From this Kelvin Osei Adue had an easy free header as he lost his marker to head home and make it 1-1 on 55mins

The game now became very “bitsy” as almost every tackle was treated as a foul and a free kick by the ref although it has to be said that both sides were not being shy in getting “stuck in “.

Smith had a shot across the goal and also a good turn and shot that pulled a good save from Wyant and from a corner Wyant punched well again under pressure from Hatch.

In the 70th min Junior Muya went down injured and a stretcher was called as the game stopped for the Arlesey physio to pop his displaced knee cap back into place, and he was replaced as the game restarted several mins later.

A good long shot by Fuller was well saved by Wyant and at the other end McBride broke through but hesitated; this allowed Debola to get back and he defended his area well getting the ball to go wide for a goal kick. Issacc broke into the box and shot just past the post, this was now a game that could go either way as both sides went for the win. As the game moved into injury time Ryan Lamond missed a tackle (player and ball) in the middle but the ref somehow saw this as a foul worthy of another yellow card and Issacc hit another shot that was well taken by Ponting.

From a corner the breakthrough came in the 93rd min as sub Ricky Lawrence pulled back at the far post and headed back across the goal, this may have gone in but Lorrell Smith showed his predatory instincts and headed it over the line from close range for 2-1.

In the 96th min Hatch came together with a Leighton player without that much contact but this yet again drew a yellow card from the Ref which was a bit of a theme from the game which was a shame, but Arlesey then closed the game down to finish as winners at 2-1.

A close game that saw Arlesey with another win as they worked right to the end of the game, It was a well contested game but it didn’t need 6 cards to make it so and it never boiled over. Next up Arlesey start in the FA Vase v Irchester at home next Saturday.
