vs London Colney (H)

SSML Premier Division

3rd November 2018

With the weather improving over last week, a minutes silence was held as this was Arlesey’s last home game before remembrance Sunday.

With last weeks no so great performances in mind Arlesey started strongly, Lorrell Smith raced into the box and just managed to keep his balance under a strong tackle that conceded a corner. From this Ash Fuller put in a great ball that evaded all the defence but not James Hatch and he headed it into the bottom of the net for 1-0 before everybody was even in the stadium.

Arlesey were rampant in this 1st period; Fuller found Ricky Lawrence, he turned well and found Smith whose shot was deflected and taken by the keeper. Fuller had a free kick that was taken by the keeper before Colney won a corner but this was very easily cleared.

From an Arlesey throw Lawrence dominated his defender and headed over the keeper, the ball looked to be going in itself but Lorrell Smith put it over the line to claim the goal and 2-0 after just 9 mins.

Lawrence looked strong and hit a shot that went just over the bar with a corner given. This was headed clear as far as Lawrence who put a ball in that just cleared everybody going for a goal kick. Lawrence then went down and after treatment had to go off to be replaced by Makudzeyi Makuza.

Fuller attacked into the box pulling back a low cross, the defender slid in catching his own keeper and the ref blew the whistle so that he could get treatment, the resultant drop ball in an area further up field was cleared. From a free kick hatch outjumped the keeper, he landed and turned well but his shot hit the side net in another close effort. In the next attack the defender didn’t clear the ball with it going straight up in the air, Smith pounced on it but his quick shot was taken by the keeper. Again Hatch found Fuller a good ball found Aarron Browne but his shot was wide. From a throw Hatch headed on and 3 or 4 shot flew in with defenders throwing themselves in front of the ball and eventually they managed to get the ball clear

A FK found Aarron Gooch who found Browne his shot was blocked leaving a Colney break with Arlesey well up field but a great tackle from Demi Debola stopped this before Colney were awarded a FK which was put well wide by ex Arlesey player Laurance Vaughan. A great break by Smith saw him bring the ball down with a great touch, he beat his defender and pulled back a cross but it missed the rest of the attack and it was cleared. On 42 mins Fuller again put in a great cross that Hatch bravely went in with his defender and headed home for 3-0. With just a couple of mins to half time there was still time for Aedan Gaffney to feed in an excellent ball to put Aaron Browne through but Jack Metcalf in goal did well to save at his feet leave it at 3-0 and a superb 45 mins of football from Arlesey.

Colney had to respond and up there game in the 2nd half and they started brighter. A good interception from Adam Brown put the ball out for a throw; Loren Maxwell put in a cross that was cleared out to Vaughan whose shot was blocked for a corner that came to Bobby Armstrong but as he was closed down his shot was well over. Arlesey responded as the floodlights came on as Makuza shot over before Hatch found Makuza again but his good looking cross was cleared. A good move from Arlesey saw Lewis Sinclair feed Smith who beat his man and pulled back to Fuller but his shot was wide. Channing Campbell-Young was booked for a foul on Smith while Jack Mace was also booked at the same time for dissent. The free kick from Fuller was to strong and went out.

From a Colney corner Vaughan headed wide before a cross in from Maxwell was an easy take for Robbie Ponting. Arlesey were close as Smith with his back to goal did an overhead kick that trickle just the wrong side of the post and from a throw Aaron Gooch headed onto the roof of the net. Changes started to be made by both sides with Jason Darvall coming on for Aarron Browne who had taken a knock. Adam Brown got a card for a comment and almost straight away Hatch was also booked.

As Arlesey kept pressing Fuller put in another great cross that beat Metcalf and found Makuza who half volleyed home into the net for 4-0 with his 1st ever senior goal, a special moment on 84 mins.

With a few minutes left Hatch went off with a knock and was replaced by Derek Newton and all looked safe until The Colney forward was fed through the middle only to be pulled down by Adam brown who received a straight red card. The free kick was stopped by the wall coming back before being shot well over the bar. Into added time Ponting did well to smother a low cross and a Colney corner was put out before the final whistle went for a very comfortable 4-0 win.

This was a very good response from Arlesey after the previous week and most teams would have wilted from the 1st 45 mins of pressure. They held the pressure of the inevitable Colney fight back and increased their lead in the 2nd period; a very good performance apart from the one blot right at the end with the red card. Next week it’s just up the road to bottom club Stotfold who although they are still without a win they have been improving over recent weeks so Arlesey must guard against any complacency.
