vs Potton United
SSML Premier Division
25th August 2018
Today offering against the League leaders looked a good game on paper and it was. With questions asked after the last two games over defensive errors an improvement was called for and this was given today from the whole team.
Arlesey looked sharp from the off as Ash Fuller hit a shot from a throw that was blocked, but on the brake both Josh Bamford and Aaron Murrell were put through but Robbie Ponting came out quickly to clear. Mukudzeyi Makuzza put a good ball into Lorrell Smith and he went down in the box under a tackle, a big shout for penalty went up but was waived away by the Ref.
Potton were showing why they are at the top of the table as they applied a bit of pressure with Calum Forster and Bamford combining well but the danger was cut out by Ponting. Another good save from Ponting saved Bamford’s header. A Fuller free kick was just taken at the 2nd attempt by Tyler Josephs in the Potton goal. This was proving to be a good end to end game but as James Hatch attacked he was fouled about 20 yards out. As Adam Mead looked to take the kick and Potton organised themselves, Ash Fuller just out thought everybody else and took a quick free kick that went into the unguarded net and although Potton protested it was 1-0 to Arlesey on 21 mins.
Arlesey were now on top; Smith broke through but his shot was stopped by a great save from the keeper. Another good ball put Smith through again, again the keeper rushed out as Smith shot and it looked to have come off his hand outside of the box before dropping to Fuller who rode a wrestling challenge from the Potton defender before slotting it low into the net for his and Arlesey’s 2nd goal and 2-0 on 25 mins
Potton got a free kick that deflected off the wall but Ponting did really well to shift his weight and make a great save. Arlesey countered as Makuzza rode two tackles to get into the box and Hatch got in a good header that was well saved. Smith got through again but Josephs did well at his feet and got a knock for his trouble. At the other end a shot by Christian Smail was flicked just past the post by Ryan Lewis and a header by Bamford was pushed onto the post by Ponting, a really good end to end game as the half time whistle went.
The second half started as the 1st finished, Smail shot wide before Smith again broke clear before he was pulled back by Jordan Wright who was shown yellow by the Ref. A Mead Free Kick produced a corner that was cleared before the game had “its moment”.
Makuzza fouled his man in the middle, the ref said free kick and suddenly it was all pushing and shoving. Wright ran a full 20 yards and clearly pushed over an Arlesey player; as the ref sorted things out he showed a card to Alex Parrott and a 2nd Yellow follow by the Red to Wright. Somehow on a Potton free kick they had received 2 bookings and a Red card; just stupidity.
Potton didn’t seem to react to losing their centre half and a free kick to Arlesey 5 mins later was taken by Ponting deep in his own half, he found Hatch who pulled it back to Fuller who wasn’t marked and he joyfully smashed ball home for his 1st ever career hatrick and 3-0. Again quick and decisive thinking from Arlesey.
Potton didn’t give up though and after they brought on ex Arlesey player Ash Farooqui they looked more stable but it was a bit of a case of shutting to barn door after the horse has bolted.
A long ball up was contested by Ponting and Murrell on the edge of the box; it didn’t really look much but as the two clashed the ref thought it was a foul by Ponting and pointed to the spot for a somewhat soft penalty. Murrell took the kick but Ponting made a great save but he couldn’t hang onto it and as it bounced back Bamford reacted quickest and headed it over Ponting and it was 3-1 on 74 mins.
As Arlesey replaced tiring legs Potton pushed forward but this week the Arlesey looked far more determined and they all defended well and as the game moved into the final few mins Smith got his head to a corner that beat Josephs but it was well cleared off the line by a defender.
In the 91st min Mead saw the keeper off his line and hit a great ball from the centre spot that went into the net but the ref had already given a free kick against him and indeed booked Mead for kicking the ball away which was perhaps a little harsh given the strike he had just made. The game finished 3-1 and a very deserved victory for Arlesey against a good Potton Side.
