MATCH REPORT

vs Tring Athletic

SSML Premier Division

6th October 2018

A very wet and cold day was a bit of a shock to the system. Against the team immediately above them in the table Arlesey had to make a couple of changes against what looked a very big side. Indeed for the 1st time we saw a player actually bigger than Adam Brown in Carl Mensah.

Tring started strongly from the whistle. An early free kick was wasted but after just 3 min Alex Campana put in a cross from the left that found Aston Campbell in the box who had avoided his marker and only had Robbie Ponting in front of him, The forward flicked the ball up and over Ponting from close range and it was 0-1 before we had really started.

Tring pushed on and applied the pressure, Another cross in was taken by Ponting and the excellent Campbell easily lost his marker again and accelerated past Adam Brown but his low shot was well saved by Ponting.

Arlesey won a corner to relieve the pressure slightly but it was well taken by Connor Sansom in goal. Tring piled on the pressure with a series of corners; Kieran Turner had a shot over the bar, joe Fitzgerald had a shot that brought another good save from Ponting for a corner, and Campana had a shot before Arlesey eventually cleared the pressure as a good move fed in Makuza Makudzeyi but he was well stopped by a good tackle from Ben Johnson. Campana cut in from the left and had ashot that was deflected for a corner, and yet another ball in from Campana took a deflection and came to Campbell who touched it 1st time past Ponting and it was 0-2 on 18 mins with Arlesey not really getting started.

Arlesey “rolled up their sleeves”. A good cross in from Makuzza was well taken by Sansom under pressure from Ash Fuller and James hatch hit a good looking shot that unfortunately hit Lorrell Smith and was cleared.

Campbell was fed through again; Ponting came out quickly and forced Campbell around him which allowed Tom Guiney to make a great tackle that went for a corner that Ponting collected.

Fuller hit a great shot from 30 yards that had Sansom scrambling but the shot went just past the post and Lorrell Smith hit a shot that Sansom took two attempts to collect. Hatch and Smith played a good 1-2 before Hatch was hauled down. Fuller’s free kick from about 25 yards was well taken by Sansom. Arlesey had few more attempts before half time but they were restricted to long range efforts and it ended at half time still 0-2 to Tring.

Tring started the 2nd period like the 1st pushing on from the whistle. They gained an early free kick as Campbell was fouled, the defence cleared this but they could do little as Campbell lost his marker and received the ball in space, Ponting came out quickly but Campbell easily beat him with a shot past him into the net and 0-3 on 49 mins.

As before Tring applied the pressure as Campana cut in and fizzed a cross/shot across the box that also beat the post and from another free kick on the edge Turner fired over the bar.

Arlesey replaced Makuza with Aarron Browne and looked better for it. Smith had a shot that was deflected for a corner, but today Arlesey were struggling to get the ball past the tower like height of Carl Mensah who headed clear for a throw. This was delivered in deep and bounced up hitting a defender on the hand and the ref pointed to the spot for a very rare penalty for Arlesey that Ash Fuller dispatched to get a goal back at 1-3 on 59 mins.

Joe Fitzgerald said something to the linesman that earned a yellow card before Smith found Fuller but his shot was well saved.A series of Arlesey corners came out to Aarron Browne and he hit a good shot just skimming the bar/post junction. James Hatch also saw a yellow card for a foul as the midfield tried to get some control but the free kick was cleared. A free kick to Tring was punched out to Luke Dunstan but his shot was well clear of the mark.

Tring made some changes as they rested Campbell and without him they looked a more “ordinary” team; Browne found Fuller whose cross found Ryan Lamond, he hit a good on target shot but Sansom did well to push it around the post when unsighted. From the corner Mensah again made the ball to be over hit and Hatch stretching headed wide. Browne put in a good cross but again Mensah headed clear. With time running out and Arlesey seeking a goal they almost succumbed to the sucker punch on the break as the ball came to sub Chris Vardy but he slipped in a good position and hit it wide so that it finished as a 1-3 defeat to Arlesey.

This was a VERY good Tring team that I think will be asking all of the questions as the season goes on. Their forwards are sharp quick and strong and the defence is big. On the day Arlesey didn’t play to their own strengths but they can improve on this where maybe Tring are currently playing at their peak. Next up Arlesey travel to London Tigers and an early chance of a double having already beaten them 2-0 on the opening game of the season.
